My vet (also a friend) is 75 and old school, his Father is about to turn 100, was a vet. Both have little positive to say about the young veterinarians who need to run panels of tests to diagnose anything. Cost their clients lots more $$$. Fixes are also costly (drugs and surgeries).
It's insane... when there are vetinary oncologists and heart specialists your spidey sense should be going off! I'm sure vet dermatology is right around the corner... it will be a luxury to own a domestic animal.
My 10yo Husky got tangled up in something and tore up a rear ankle tendon. My vet called in another vet surgeon and they consulted whether the health of my dog and the quantity and quality of his remaining life justified the repair surgery which was expensive = about $2,000 though it would be over $5,000 in the big city specialty Vet surgery. Well, we did the surgery and he recovered well and lived out his normal large dog lifespan. I live in a different area now and if I decided on having another dog I would research Vets in my area, but I would take the trip back to my friend if he is still in practice at that time.
