I don’t like the word ‘captured’. It implies a helplessness, with no choice or chance of escape, and can create sympathy. Can we please instead use the proper definition? Corrupted, not captured.
I understand what you are saying. On the other hand, I do think a sizeable number of people are captured in the sense that their captors have a "file" of past transgressions that would ruin the person's life if made public. (Note that I am not excusing any of the evil behavior.)
Meaning that they were already corrupt beforehand if they have past transgressions behind used against them. But they're politicians, so it's no surprise. They lie for a living.
Often they are personal transgressions, such as infidelity or public exposure. I guess I would say that those with past transgressions are either corrupt or dysfunctionally stupid.
it hinges on the intention I guess; it always struck me that the organisation "CEPI" from persons close to/ wielding £ & apparent influence over such institutions, actually translates from the Latin to I captured ; )
