Thanks Jessica, great accessible read.

In my 'Forrest Gump' of a career-life, I was at TIGR when Craig Venter and Claire Fraser sequenced the genome of microbes, then finally collaborated with NIH Human Genome Project to get a full human sequence. I was on their human subjects/ Animal care oversight board. [We were from Buffalo SUNY and worked with Darrell Doyle PhD making monoclonals in the early nineties. ]

"See what competition can do? Imagine a world where there’s only the NIH in control of everything. We need independent companies, and we need competition. "

I said something similar, like , 'everyone is competing, just like a basketball game,' to the press who interviewed me at that time. [Collins clearly did not like to be forced to actually produce scientific work. Too busy playing his banjo and quoting Bible verses... had to maintain that 'innocent image']

TIGR collaborated with everyone, and my hardest job was trying to convince Craig to NOT give away all his DNA to be used in experiments. Privacy issues!! Especially for related family. But he was a man on a mission, with big visions.
