Child is now grown, independent, and has always been robustly, vibrantly glowing and healthy.

This is far from insanity. It is a cold, clinical and rational decision by a group with different goals to those of you and your readers.
The central lesson of the last 3yrs for me has been if someone does something apparently irrational, incompetent, or stupid, first use Occam's Razor to frame what the proximate goal of such actions could be - however impossibly wicked that goal is.
Regrettably thus far this approach is invariably being proven right.
Perhaps when we stop making excuses for these actions, and resign ourselves to face the evil motivating them - ie calling out and holding the perpetrators to account - we can stop this.
Thank you again for your courage, and for continuing to be a cipher for laypeople like me.
