Serving other living beings can be divine practice...serving God through proxies (although that's illusion since it's all, "God" in disquise, if we want to play well, anyway) can be the only practice needed for one's life that can create spiritual evolution, whether a person thinks of it as that or not.
I was a cab driver in L.A. in the 80s for a few years while trying/desiring to be a pro guitarist/songwriter. I really enjoyed that job...fun, different people, a bit of actual danger (having a gun pulled on you from someone behind you in a car isn't fun.) but what I learned was that it was my pleasure to give them a perfect ride in a clean vehicle from a professional who knew the best/cheapest routes and sometimes to provide info for tourists etc. The ultimate good feeling as a cabbie was having a business person get in my cab in DT at rush hour and have them fall asleep in back seat while I took them to LAX. It became a sort of game and it was satisfying so...I agree that really learning the, "art of pleasing" through service, (not going along with some whack idea just to be liked, aka, "people pleasing".) Sometimes serving people means providing truth and not going along with evil. So service these days, especially for medical and science people, is to speak truth and buck the system. Jessica, your info-waitress skills are excellent. And the menu keeps changing.
SThe human element is being replaced like never before in our society and those humans still working as cashiers, waiters etc seem rude in general. Yeah, I'm "old" now and remember, "thank you" etc. while leaving the cash register.
So...point is not to tell stories or whine, just saying this experience of serving God through others, or just serving people as other humans is a path leading to love and wisdom.
Beautiful, your couple wasn’t distracted by their phones. Covid amplified phone/digital dependence (how many cases now? Where? Zoom) and we have lost the patience and art of observation, conversation and compassion from where serenity takes root. I bussed/waitressed from age 11 (small tourist town) through age 22 putting myself through school, I remember one family who came frequently (summer home) and on my last day before heading to university the Dad gave me a generous gift, their family had some challenging kids!). thank you for articulating your musings which have brought back memories and helped me understand why eating out isn’t the same, nor is trying to make a connection with my server - but I’ll never stop trying nor stop tipping abundantly.
Oh Jessica … to wake up to this beautiful gift of yours that is within you filled me with joy and happiness today because it’s not been like this for a while. The world has changed so and you brought me to a better place this morning as I face another day of…well, not serenity. My body cries for it, but life after Covid it has left many people in very difficult situations. I worked 35 years in a private practice in my home as a massage therapist. There wasn’t one client I didn’t give everything I could possibly do for them and more, and I always prayed over them in silence asking God to use my hands to heal his children. This was pre Covid. I had such peace. Now after everything that’s happened in my life and families d/t Covid I struggle with each day now when I wake … what’s going to hit today. It saddens me, as I wasn’t expecting this and life to turn at this age so drastically the other way. So waking to you this morning gives me hope and comfort going forward in my day! It was like waking up after a beautiful dream! Thank you as always Jessica and for sharing yourself so genuinely from my heart. You are such hope as we go forward. Have a wonderful week! I’m going to find my peace again…Jan 💐💝
You noted your old spot Bruno's was killed by COVID. Sadly it was not COVID, but the response to COVID by our dysfunctional medical system. It is a frustration having to live with the distrust I have acquired via COVID.
It certainly looks that way. So many "experts", knowingly or not, were complicit. I long for accountability for those complicit, but am not optimistic.
What a delightful way to start my week having read this while sipping my morning tea. Since I am also a Christian I will just say this is an example of Love thy neighbor as thyself…. I think you showed that in a very real way. And that is what we all need to do more of every day. It is unfortunate that too many have fallen into the bifurcation trap, and that they adhere to a side for the sake of the side. Let’s all be on the side of humanity on the side of good vs. evil. That is the onnlynlosition form which to operate as a society.
Jessica Rose, I love your mind, heart, and soul. Thank you for sharing your enormous gifts of intelligence, compassion, and action. You are a healer in all ways. You inspire the awakening that is essential to our evolution. 🙏
Thanks Jessica for the lovely article and for shining a light on what really went on with Covid so bravely. Truth and justice will always be important to humanity and maybe a well-designed and intentioned AI can help us deliver that.
If you are a fan of 'Time to Say Goodbye' and haven't watched 'The 12 Days of Christine', part of an excellent UK BBC series called 'Inside No 9', it could be 30 minutes well spent. Truly a creation of some beauty.
What a comfortable, warming essay, Miss Jessica. You have a wonderful way with words, and this sharing is a great gift. Agree with you totally on personal interactions which bring positivity to each participant. As an INTJ with a propensity to reject all nonsense, was complimented by my sainted, skeptical (of my social skills) Mother, who said, “I can’t believe you are so diplomatic”, to which I knowingly laughed. She was right to be amazed, but I had worked hard to develop something called empathy. That has helped smooth almost all interactions even those with extreme zealots. Bless you, Miss Jessica.
Lovely story. I too have done my share of waitering - in an ice cream bar in North London, over 50 years ago. There was a notice on the back of the door that led to the factory: "The customer is always right". Work to that maxim and the customer will also be happy, especially if it's clear that you are going over and above the call of duty.
This article was so beautifully written and gave me a glimpse into your personality and world view. Before reading this article, all I knew about you was you are a brilliant scientist/mathematician. In this article I got to know you a bit more as a woman. You revealed your sense of respect for other people, your sensitivity to their feelings, your generosity of spirit, how gracious you are as a hostess or waitress, your sophistication in terms of your taste in food and in wine, and your kindness to those around you. I imagine you made a real contribution to the pleasure and enjoyment of the meal for those who were fortunate enough to have you as their server or hostess. In fact, the article itself was like a meal with a fine wine, something to savor and something unforgettable. Thank you.

Waiters and waitresses, called "servers" these days, like cabbies, are being replaced by robots.
At least in my city. 😥
What is the proper amount to tip a robot?
You tip the human "cashier" and wait for the robot to deliver...
Is this the ultimate nail in the coffin, to exchange the societal lubricant with robots?
"A person who is not a peace with who they are, or what they have [not] accomplished, is not serene and therefore, cannot truly hold power."
I like that!

Jessica, you're definitely a beautiful soul. Thanks for brightening my morning.
You're welcome Dave. :)

A muse ing enius...
Thanks for a special read to start my morning 😊

Covid was a planned response

Without Empathy, there is no economy.
Can you post about the recent Meta AI Disaster? Over 45,000 people have signed the petition to get their Disabled Facebook Accounts back. https://www.change.org/p/meta-wrongfully-disabling-accounts-with-no-human-customer-support Without empathy, AI will destroy all of us.
without empathy, there is no economy. i LOVE that
I distilled my comment from your article, take a bow!

Agree with you, including the No 9 recommendation.
Inside No 9 is genius. Every tale different

What a brilliant, insightful column. It was like I was there in the restaurant on a snowy, Newfoundland night.
